By 2025, the UK has a record 206,682 rooftop solar photovoltaic installations, bringing the total number of certified small solar installations in the UK to 1.85 million.
This figure comes from the latest data from the Micro Generation Certification Scheme (MCS), which has been tracking annual rooftop renewable energy installations for years. The MCS notes that new rooftop solar projects have been “one of the key drivers” behind the growth; since October 2023, solar deployments in new buildings accounted for 32% of all rooftop solar installations, but in the first 11 months of 2025, this figure has increased to 35%, indicating that these deployments are becoming an increasingly important part of the UK’s energy mix.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: “Demand for solar panels is at an all-time high in the UK as people know it’s a fantastic way to cut energy costs,” referring to the Future Residential Standard (FHS), which will mandate new rooftop solar as a key accelerator for the distributed solar industry.
"That's why this government is committed to introducing FHS, so the vast majority of new homes are equipped with solar panels, and every family living in these homes is exempt from the bills."
